SPRINGFIELD, IL - Last year Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced that his office would stop mailing citizens license plate renewal notices because it cost his office too much. The result has been marked increase in unsuspecting drivers being ticketed for outdated stickers, and a huge windfall of cash for the government.
Dave Druker, a spokesman for the Secretary of State’s office, says that due to the lack of notices, Illinois has collected nearly $10 million on 476,550 late fees so far in 2016. That’s compared to the $4.3 million on approximately 214,500 late fees over the same time period last year.
The Illinois House passed a bill that would’ve given drivers a 30-day “grace period” in which drivers couldn’t be fined for having expired stickers, but the Democrat-controlled Illinois Senate failed to act on the bill.
