DuPAGE County - Taxpayer accountability is what watchdog groups like Illinois Leaks, Edgar County Watchdogs and For the Good of Illinois want from the members of the DuPage College Board. But the members aren't used to having taxpayers scour their records, spending habits and emails, and are tired of the embarrassment and extra work those groups are bringing to the board.
In late November, board member Dianne McGuire launched a rhetorical attack over the bow when she referred to those groups as "right wing," "extremist" organizations, affiliated with the "Tea Party." Their pubic comments and criticism were comparable to Nazi-like tactics used to destroy the Jews, Ms. McGuire hinted during a 20-minute speech.
In 2008, McGuire ran for Illinois State House as a Democrat and lost in a close race with Republican State Rep. Darlene Senger.
McGuire's comment stirred a defense before the board from a Polish Jew from New York whose grandfather was murdered by German Nazis during World War II. Deputy Director of OpenTheBooks.com Matthew Tyrmand demanded McGuire resign.
"McGuire's statement goes well beyond politically- correct and approaches hate speech," Tyrmand said. "I'm shocked and offended and most notably disgusted by your hateful rhetoric in defending wasteful spending."
