INDIANAPOLIS - Monday, neighboring Indiana became the first state to opt out of the Obama Administration's Common Core curriculum standards.
“I believe our students are best served when decisions about education are made at the state and local level,” Indiana Governor Mike Pence said in a statement.
“By signing this legislation, Indiana has taken an important step forward in developing academic standards that are written by Hoosiers, for Hoosiers, and are uncommonly high, and I commend members of the General Assembly for their support,” the Republican governor added, according to the Star.
Wednesday, Illinois State Rep. Dwight Kay (R-Glen Carbon) will be asking the Illinois House Elementary & Secondary Education Committee to delay implementing the Common Core curriculum standards in Illinois, citing the program's cost to be estimated at $773 million - when the state's budget is already in the red, even after numerous budget cuts in the past two years.
