Report: Illegal immigrant population in Illinois tops 500,000

A report by the left-wing Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights has concluded that the number of illegal aliens in Illinois is now at 511,000 -- about four percent of the total population.

Other findings include:

• 54% of illegal aliens live in the Chicago suburbs, in places such as Aurora, Bensenville, Cicero, Elgin, Hanover Park, Melrose Park and Waukegan. Only 10% live Downstate, with concentrations in Champaign, Kankakee and Winnebago counties and in the Metro East area.
• Half of the illegals speak English pretty well, 32% have “limited English proficiency” and 19% don’t speak English at all
• 29% live in poverty
