Yesterday, we were fortunate to have nationally-recognized scholar and author John Lott on the Teri O'Brien Show to discuss his book, More Guns, Less Crime, which is now in its 3rd edition. During the interview, I was surprised to hear him begin a sentence with "I couldn't put this in the book because it was being published by the University of Chicago Press." He went on to describe a phone call from Mayor Richard M. Daley to the president of the University of Chicago,in which the mayor described all the wonderful things the city wanted to do for the university, if only they could get rid of the guy writing those terribly inconvenient books, papers and studies proving that disarming law-abiding citizens does not reduce crime rates. You'd think that Mayor Daley wouldn't have to read Mr. Lott's work to know that. He could just check the murder rate in the city of Chicago, where the mayor's belligerent and long-standing support for gun control hasn't exactly turned it into a violence-free utopia.
Mr. Lott is now at Yale, but the memory of the Chicago way lingers. The audio is here:
