After Gov. Jan Brewer (R-Arizona) signed Senate Bill 1070 on Friday and protesters mixed it up with riot police in Phoenix, I was led to believe by some excited news reports that Arizona had just arbitrarily and indiscriminately stomped on the civil liberties of anyone with a Hispanic name who was just walking down the street. President Obama immediately condemned the law and implied he has a secret plan to deal with unlawful immigration. But after I read the bill, I had to wonder what all the fuss was really about. Any law can be abused; but this law seems to me to be carefully written and limited to specific remedies to stop crime in my view.
