Cook County Republicans are circulating petitions to get former U.S. Senate candidate John Arrington on the November ballot in the suburban county's regional superintendent's race. Arrington told the SouthtownStar's Phil Kadner that he understood the Southtown's position to end the office altogether, but said as long as the office exists, a Republican's name should be on the ballot.
"But the office still exists and as long as the office exists, it is in the best interests of taxpayers to have a person in it who would use its powers to benefit the residents of Illinois and not line his own pockets or hire his own relatives," he said.
Arrington said his first act as regional schools superintendent would be to create a rule prohibiting nepotism. The position has a salary of $103,000 a year. Other employees in the office have been paid $80,000 or more.
Kadner reports the Democrats have no candidate in the race thus far. The current superintendent of the Suburban Cook County Regional Office of Education is Charles Flowers, who was recently charged with felony theft of government funds.
