Illinois conservatives are saddened to learn of the passing of former State Rep. Maureen Murphy, who also served on the Cook County Board of Reviews until January 2007. Murphy was best known for her leadership in tax increase fighting and was a dependable social conservative while in the Illinois legislature.
In his email announcing Mrs. Murphy's death, Cook County GOP chairman Lee Roupas wrote "Maureen was a fighter, a person who cared deeply about the Republican Party, and someone who wasn't afraid to stand up for what she believed in. We have had no one quite like her in our caucus over the years, and she will be undoubtedly missed..."
When Maureen was serving in the lllinois House, she encouraged volunteer social conservative activists to hang their coats in her Capitol office. She wanted us to feel welcome there and she wanted to be identified as a social conservative -- something notable those days for a woman in the Illinois GOP caucus. .
Obituary information to follow. Our sympathies with the Murphy family during these difficult days. The photo to the right was taken by Illinois Review in June 2006.
