Our friend John Ruberry over at Marathon Pundit has asked us to join him in a rampage against Cook County's proposed sales tax increase to be voted on Monday. If passed, Cook County's sales tax would be the highest in the nation.
Ruberry has called on Barack Obama to return to the scene of last year's crime, when he stuck his national nose into local elections and endorsed Todd Stroger for Cook County Board President (among other disastrous recommendations).
If he's proned to getting involved in local elections, he should make an effort to get involved in local debates over tax increases by calling in his chips and telling Stroger a Cook County sales tax increase could hurt Obama's chances to be president of the U.S. (or something outrageous like that. . . .).
At the very least, Obama should push to squelch the proposed tax increase. (But do we really think he will? After all, Obama's a big government junkie and believes more in bureaucracies' ability to make better decisions for us than we can make ourselves, doesn't he?)
Call a few Cook County Commissioners and tell them to vote "NO" tomorrow on the proposed sales tax hike. Tell them to cut the budget and dump some of Stroger's family members from the payroll as a place to begin.
And thanks, John, for starting the "Stop Cook County tax hike" drum beat.
