Trent Franks, R-Ariz., is criticizing calls by Democratic presidential candidates to have abortions covered under possible new universal health insurance programs. Democratic presidential contenders Barack Obama and John Edwards support coverage of abortions under their universal health plans in which all Americans would get some kind of health care coverage. Obama and Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of the presidential candidate, made such statements before national Planned Parenthood meetings last week. Planned Parenthood, Edwards, Obama and Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton support abortion rights. Franks, a Republican representing Glendale, Sun City and Kingman, opposes abortion rights and criticized having taxpayer money going toward abortions or abortion coverage being part of some universal health plan. Universal health coverage entails either a government-run health system, mandated coverage for employers or a combination of the two.
