Former Bush advisor and speech writer David Frum offers a plethora of provocative ideas for the future of the Republican Party in his 2008 book titled Comeback: Conservatism That Can Win Again. Writing prior to the debacle that was Election Day, Frum proves prophetic as the organization once known as the party of ideas lost its way and became the bloated, power-hungry, corrupt operation its adherents had long rallied against, namely a mirror-image of the Democrats.
Moreover, Republicans' tendency to look in the rear-view mirror and attempt to reinvent the Reagan magic is an exercise in futility, he argues, for the issues that Reagan tackled in the revolution he led 28 years ago are largely resolved. In the process, the GOP has slowly drifted toward racial, regional, and class-based isolation, catering to the interests of the wealthy, southerners and rural residents, and whites, a demographic that shrinks proportionally with each passing day.
