CHICAGO - Governor Rauner's meeting with Chicago's Chance the Rapper was postponed from Wednesday to Friday morning, the Grammy award-winner announced Thursday. Tornado damage in various locations throughout the state Tuesday night caused the governor to reschedule their meeting reported to focus on Chicago Public School funding.
After researching Chance the Rapper's lyrics and finding them to make frequent use of vulgarities and obscenities, Illinois Review asked Illinois Family Institute's cultural researcher Laurie Higgins her thoughts on the governor meeting with the rapper.
Ms. Higgins said the meeting is just another indication of the governor's "disdain" for conservatives - the base of the Illinois Republican Party.
"It’s clear that Illinois’ Republican Governor Bruce Rauner has a tenuous connection if not disdain for conservatism as revealed in his siding with Democrats to force doctors and pregnancy centers to promote abortion even when abortion violates their beliefs, in his appointment of Democratic homosexual activist Duke Alden to the pro-homosexual kangaroo court known as the Illinois Human Rights Commission, and now in his meeting with Chance the Rapper to discuss important Illinois matters," Higgins told Illinois Review.
Chance, (né Chancellor Jonathan Bennett) is a Grammy-winning 23-year-old hip hop artist and graduate of Jones College Prep High School where he was suspended for 10 days his senior year for possession of marijuana. In 2013, Bennett, who has a daughter with his estranged girlfriend and sings about his Christian faith, said this in an MTV interview about his acclaimed mixtape Acid Rap:
"[There] was a lot of acid involved in Acid Rap," he said, chuckling. "I mean, it wasn't too much — I'd say it was about 30 to 40 percent acid... more so 30 percent acid." So naturally, we had to ask: Was it difficult to rap under that influence?
"No, it's not hard to rap on acid," he responded matter-of-factly….It was more so just a booster, a bit of fuel.”
Here are some lyrics from other work of Chance the Rapper (amended by editor):
In the streets my face a coupon
Her p**** too warm
All these b****** come to do harm
Just bought a new charm
F*** a watch, I buy a new arm, you lukewarm
I'm Uncle Luke with the h***
Pretty bi******, centerfolds
Tippy toes around my crib in their robes, just their robes
Half a milli' in the safe, another in the pillowcase
Codeine got me movin' slower than a caterpillar race
F*** is wrong with you? What you thinkin'?
F*** you thought it was?
I just popped five percocets and only caught a buzz
Oh, they f*** with me cause I'm different
New sound, new appearance
B****** both from the 6
Give a f*** about a b****
Walk out, my hand on my d***, I'm the s****
"While secular “progressives” often demonstrate contempt for the faith of theologically orthodox Christians, they celebrate Bennett’s Christian faith," Higgins said. "Perhaps that’s why Rauner is seeking help from Bennett on the important issues facing Illinois. Or maybe it’s Chance the Rapper’s celebrity that to him an audience with Rauner."
Maybe after their meeting, Rauner’s office will share a transcript of their discussion so the public can learn what Chance has to offer about Illinois’ problems.
