The New York Times reports that Jeb Bush requested a secret meeting with Mitt Romney in Utah this week. If the report is correct, it raises the suspicion that two establishment flunkies want to deprive GOP primary voters of a conservative alternative in 2016. IR readers might recall that Romney also held a secret meeting with Newt Gingrch before a crucial 2012 Louisiana primary to conspire to siphon votes away from Rick Santorum.
Romney failed that time and Santorum still beat both Romney and Gingrich in three southern primaries, but Romney still loves secrecy. Why should voters trust any candidate who hides in secret meetings? It only makes me distrust both Bush and Romney even more.
In 1936, FDR became frustrated with a deadlock between coal mine owners and the United Mine Workers of America and said, "a plague on both your houses."
That's my reaction to secret meetings of the GOP establishment.
