I think Mayor Rahm Emanuel outlined the overall worth of the Ebola predicament fairly well when he proposed that progressives should "never let a serious crisis go to waste.' What he meant by those words is that diseases like Ebola – along with other kinds of catastrophes – offer unique opportunities to put forth intrusions upon autonomy where the Left could not have otherwise prevailed. As any community organizer will tell you, the sign of a good representative rests in his ability to lie in wait for just the right moment to grab power.
Look. It's not that Ebola is organically predestined to be the most politically advantageous virus in the history of the world. It's just that the Left has an agenda, and Ebola is expedient at this moment in time when progressives have all the right junk in all the right places. They call the shots. They direct the narrative. The GOP leadership couldn't direct its way out of a wet paper bag. Now is the time to strike before the opportunity slips away.
Of course, any contagion might have provided this same occasion to expand the growth of government if given the right spin. There's nothing written in stone that it had to be Ebola. The Flu, AIDS, SARS have all sated the Left's appetite for agitating mania and doomsday scenarios from time to time.
It's that hemorrhaging from the eyes thing that tips the scales though. Go ahead and admit it. Even the most rational, freedom-loving conservatives are bargaining with themselves, "Okay, just how much liberty can I spare if it can prevent me from vomiting blood?" Democrats could not have scripted a better lede for justifying their carte blanche spending bias.
The CDC covets more money. That goes without saying. How much? Can we really put a price tag on good health? What will the money be used for? Typical Republican response. Must they always be such cheapskates? Clearly, the GOP wants your children to die…and they call themselves pro-life.
The sequester? That's why the CDC hasn't been able to contain the spread of Ebola to our country. The reason that your children are now in danger of contracting a virus that kills anywhere from 50 to 75% of the people it infects is because the Republicans are tightwads in spite of the $6.3 trillion in annual spending with $1.3 trillion of that being earmarked for healthcare spending.
It's certainly not because the Obama Administration refuses to secure the borders, or expel illegal immigrants, or ban travel from West Africa. It's not because they've been telling everyone that Ebola is just an insignificant filth disease that has no chance of taking hold in these, the pristinely sterilized and disinfected United States where everyone bathes in Clorox and drinks Lysol chasers…or that Ebola is nearly impossible to spread from person to person unless you happen to be Liberian.
None of that is relevant because, per the wunderkinds of the Obama Administration, securing the homeland and providing appropriate prevention messaging won't do anything to stop and may even further spread this deadly virus. Of course, while you've been trying to straighten out that pretzel logic, the barely contagious "filth disease" has spread to an American health care worker. Experts are not sure how it happened, and if they don't know, then "how" is obviously unknowable.
Do notice, though, how quickly the Dems can mobilize forces for the efforts they believe are worthwhile. Their drive to expand government…it's like the freaking beaches of Normandy right now in spite of the executive branch's admitted inability to actually do the job it already has. Per the Wall Street Journal, spending on public health activity has risen an astounding 187% since 1993. You might rightly ask, "Where did the CDCs money go if not toward disease prevention?"
"In 2013 HHS raided the PPHF [Prevention and Public Health Fund] of $453.8 million, or 48% of that year's appropriation, to fund the ObamaCare insurance exchanges. Those PPHF dollars that have flowed to public health are an insult to this once august field. The PPHF sponsors liberal pressure groups to lobby states and cities for higher tobacco taxes and zoning laws that restrict fast food, and its other urgent causes include dance fitness, massage therapy, painting bike lanes, salad bars in school cafeterias, pet neutering and urban gardening."
Furthermore, John Kerry has taken time away from what must be a lull in his State Department duties…I guess the ISIS show is on hiatus… to expand messaging that Climate Change is responsible for the spread of diseases such as Ebola. CNS News reports on Kerry's address at the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center and quotes Kerry as advocating for increased spending this way:
"The worst that could happen to us is we create a whole lot of new jobs, we kick our economies into gear, we have healthier people, healthier children because we have cleaner air, we live up to our environmental responsibility, we become truly energy independent, and our security is stronger and greater and sustainable as a result. That's the worst that happens to us.
What happens if they're wrong? If they're wrong - catastrophe. Life as you know it on Earth ends."
The Los Angeles Times reports that Sec. of Defense Chuck Hagel readies the Pentagon for a War on Climate Change with its Climate Change Adaptation Road Map. (I know, right? Take a moment to say it out loud. You know you want to. Climate Change Adaptation Road Map. It trips off the tongue like an Occitan sonnet.) Quoting the LA Times:
"The United Nations is holding an event in Peru in December to discuss climate change. Hagel called on defense leaders to be part of the discussion because climate change is a "threat multiplier" that can intensify the world's current problems, such as infectious diseases and terrorism."
Masters of "We've got to act fast or the world will end! No time to explain!" negotiation techniques, the Dems are already blasting the GOP for daring to ask where all the money will be spent as they grant the Defense Department's request to transfer a cool billion in funding for battling Ebola. From the Wall Street Journal:
"One thing we know about stopping pandemics is that time is of the essence," Sen. Chris Murphy (D., Conn.) said in a written statement. "Oversight by congressional defense committees must not hinder U.S. leadership in the fight against this public health nightmare."
The Defense Department – yes, that same Defense Department that sees the need for a Climate Change Adaptation Road Map to reduce the spread of communicable diseases – has been granted the ability to transfer funds between accounts but must provide an explanation as to how the money will be spent. Legislators are holding up those transfers because the Administration fails to document its strategy for fighting Ebola. Proof positive that the GOP wants your children to die. How can they think to ask for documentation at a time like this? No time for strategy. Must spend. Must spend fast.
And wouldn't it be quite a kicker if the opportunity to contain Ebola in the US was lost because money that was earmarked for the purpose of prevention was transferred into government sponsored Climate Change initiatives because wind farms were seen as the priority for combating this deadly contagion.
As ludicrous as it sounds, consider the very real possibility that Ebola funds will be used to expand the Administration's War on Coal even as the EPA comes under scrutiny for collusion with environmental organizations. From Fox News:
"Newly released emails detail what Republicans say are "cozy" ties between the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and a top environmental advocacy group, raising questions about the group's influence -- and participation -- in the Obama administration's so-called "War on Coal."
One 2010 exchange even shows the agency's future boss and a senior environmental lawyer praising each other over a legal settlement, though they ostensibly were on opposing sides of that case."
Truth be told, the Administration has no political or financial incentive for actually curtailing the spread of Ebola. Their power increases exponentially, their political allies profit during crises and they are never held responsible for their failures which are invariably chalked up to a lack of funding.
With this history in mind, we can expect that the Dems will not only fail to stop the spread of Ebola but will actually prolong and intensify it. In the pursuit of power, there will be much glare and glitter and piquancy and phantasm, and they will ultimately botch it.
As always, when the Democrats fail, you will lose.
