CHAMPAIGN - Downstate Senator Mike Frerichs celebrated President Barack Obama's birthday a day early Monday when he posted an eight-year-old photo of Obama campaigning for Frerich's 2006 Illinois Senate bid. Obama had been a U.S. Senator since January 2005, and was getting ready for his 2008 bid for the presidency.
A poll last week showed Frerichs 11 points behind his Republican opponent State Rep. Tom Cross (Plainfield) in his bid for Illinois Treasurer. Frerichs' photo with Obama may help in Cook County and Chicago, and maybe even in Champaign, but the president's high negatives may not be helpful elsewhere in the statewide race.
