SPRINGFIELD - "Career politician Dick Durbin is ignoring debate negotiations with opponent Jim Oberweis, further cementing his reputation as an arrogant, out-of-touch Washington insider," the Oberweis campaign said Wednesday.
Previously Durbin has said he will debate Oberweis. But the Durbin campaign has yet to respond to Oberweis' debate invitation sent a month ago.
"Dick Durbin has been in Washington 32 years and he's playing Washington games with the debates," said Oberweis. "I know he's busy traveling the state, proposing more spending, taxes and regulations, but he should have time to debate his opponent for this important office."
Oberweis has proposed:
- Seven major statewide debates with major media sponsors.
- At least one debate hosted by a liberal organization and one hosted by a conservative organization.
- At least three of the debates outside the Chicago media market in downstate Illinois.
- Open, free-wheeling formats to allow the best interchanges on the issues.
Various media outlets have volunteered to host debates but are waiting for Durbin to announce his debate intentions before locking down plans.
