CHICAGO - Those who throw stones shouldn't live in glass houses, the saying goes. And whether Chicago Teachers Union president Karen Lewis' digs have lots of windows is irrelevant.
What is relevant is that she's been ridiculing Mayor Rahm Emanuel for being out of touch with Chicagoans in poor neighborhoods. And all the time, she's living in a nice condo in Chicago's Kenwood neighborhood, has a vacation home in Hawaii and another one on Lake Michigan in Michigan.
Andthe CTU president makes over $200,000 a year - just a bit less than "Mayor 1%," who the city of Chicago pays $216,000 annually.
Lewis, 61, recently launched an informal exploratory committee to look into her challenging Emanuel in February 2015. Last week, Lewis put the odds at “50-50” she will run. A poll puts her nine points ahead of the embattled incumbent.
Lewis told the Sun Times she has nothing to apologize for her and her husband's lifestyle.
“I’m not going to apologize for it. I don’t think that’s wrong. I did what we are told to do. You are supposed to go to school, become educated. I have an Ivy League diploma. I have two master’s degrees. I’m a board-certified teacher.”
