ROCKFORD - State Representatives John Cabello (R-Machesney Park) and Joe Sosnowski (R-Rockford) have been appointed by House Republican Leader Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs) to serve on the new bipartisan task force charged with developing a comprehensive plan, including legislative proposals, to disrupt the flow of illegal guns in the State of Illinois.
“Most gun violence throughout Illinois and the City of Chicago isn’t caused by law-abiding gun owners, rather it comes from criminals who possessed firearms illegally,” said Cabello. “As a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, I look forward to serving on this committee to put more tools in the hands of law enforcement to keep guns out of the hands of criminals while continuing to protect the rights of upstanding gun owners.”
“I appreciate being appointed to this important task force and look forward to working with other members of the General Assembly and law enforcement officials as we explore opportunities to make Illinois communities safer and put a stop to illegal gun trafficking,” said Sosnowski.
House Resolution 1188 declares an Illegal Gun Trafficking State of Emergency and creates the Task Force to assess the following measures: (1) the necessary levels of coordination, funding, and interdepartmental and State/federal cooperation for effective gun trafficking interdiction; (2) the legal framework necessary for getting guns off the streets, including the examination of current gunrunning, straw purchasing, and unlicensed dealer penalties and their interaction with city, State, and federal policies; and (3) the feasibility of Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and Department of Justice anti-violence programs that have worked in other similarly situated states and cities, including after-school programs and job readiness, that are peer-reviewed and cost-effective.
The Task Force will submit a report of its findings to the General Assembly on or before November 1, 2014. The Illinois State Police will provide administrative and other support to the Task Force during the course of its hearings.
