SPRINGFIELD - Illinois ranked #1 in soybean production and #2 in corn in 2013. This year's weather has been favorable for the crops, setting Illinois in the running for #1 in corn nationwide yet once again. In 2013, 18.37% of the nation's corn came from the Prairie State, a close second to Iowa's 19%.
Officials estimated this week that the state's corn condition was rated at 82% good to excellent. Corn silking reached 94%, ahead of a 5-year average of 85%, according to officials.
This major source of revenue for Illinois drew State Treasurer Dan Rutherford's attention and he began running a "Cream of the Crop" photo contest for Illinois youngsters. Tuesday, his office announced the winners of this year's contest, which will be displayed at the State Fair next week in Springfield and at his office at the Capitol for a year thereafter.
