UPDATE x1: Rich Miller is reporting that the IEA also endorsed incumbent Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka. Topinka is a Republican who is being challenged by Shiela Simon who happens to be a member of the IEA.
The Illinois Education Association, one of the state’s two major teacher’s unions, unanimously voted today to endorse Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn for re-election over Republican challenger Bruce Rauner.
The decision by the IEA, which represents teachers outside Chicago, helps give Quinn campaign footsoldiers and money in taking on Rauner. The Republican challenger has stridently campaigned against public employees unions and their leaders, whom he has called “union bosses.” Rauner also is a major proponent of charter schools.
In the Republican primary, the IEA backed Rauner rival Kirk Dillard, a state senator from Hinsdale. Backing from the IEA and other unions helped drive up turnout for Dillard, though Rauner prevailed in winning the nomination.
