The now-famous Trump sign is on private property on a thriving business. Trump's Hotel has been considered by most as a magnificent building adding to Chicago's skyline. He has created many jobs and he pays a pretty penny in property taxes and that dreaded hotel tax. The "Trump" name is a valuable "brand" that is very popular. It means money, wealth, and success.
In Trump's defense, I found similar signs all over downtown, including the iconic Drake Hotel which towers over Oak Street Beach and Lake Shore Drive. Both the Sun Times and Tribune have huge signs on their buildings. The mayor has added hundreds of new billboards on his controversial DIVVY Bike stations.
There is no shortage of "Emanuel" signs in Chicago, like these:
I'm wondering why the mayor chose this battle at this time. Perhaps it is a distraction from the real issues.
Steps away from the Trump Tower on Michigan Avenue, hundreds of Chicago cops stand on the corners to prevent "wilding." This is a new phenomenon with groups of youths basically terrorizing the community with "flash mobs." The Chicago media appears to be ignoring this story. Perhaps he should focus on crime prevention, public schools, jobs, taxes, and that looming pension mess.
Politicians are focused on the midterm elections coming up this November. Right after that in February 2015, Mayor Emanuel along with the 50 aldermen are up for re-election. I imagine if it were up to Donald Trump, he may have some words for Rahm from his hit TV show The Apprentice: "YOU'RE FIRED!"
