WASHINGTON DC - House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s stunning primary loss Tuesday could help Illinois’ Peter Roskam move up the Republican ladder, but his office isn’t addressing the speculation right away.
Roskam, a lawyer from Wheaton, is chief deputy whip for House Republicans, ranking fourth in the leadership. Cantor is second, behind House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio.
The third-ranking Republican, Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California, who has the job of whip, is considered a candidate for Cantor’s position. That would put Roskam in position to vie for McCarthy’s job.
Roskam, 52, a lawyer from Wheaton, was recently appointed to a new House committee that will examine the 2012 Benghazi attacks. First elected to Congress in 2006, Roskam sits on the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee.
