SPRINGFIELD - Jim Feagans of J. Gooch Associates in Springfield told Illinois Review Tuesday that his firm is volunteering to head up efforts in circulating petitions for State Senator Sam McCann's Independent bid for governor.
"We're volunteers and we've been working to get the petitions worded correctedly, printed up and circulated," Feagans said. "We're providing the facilities to gather the petitions and will bind them and get them over to the State Board of Elections."
Feagans said Illinois is in need of a "good man" like Sam McCann to lead the state.
"This state has needed a good man like Sam McCann to lead it for a long time," he said. "I met Sam several years ago outside of politics, and I was impressed with him. He's a successful businessman and a Christian, and we support this bid for governor."
Feagans told IR the firm's phone has been ringing off the hook since the word has been circulating about a possible McCann bid for governor. They need 25,000 signatures by June 23rd to get on the 2014 ballot.
"People tell us they're not happy with the choices for governor," he said. "I most associated with the firearms industry, and I'm working with that group to get the signatures in on time."
The Illinois State Rifle Association endorsed Republican Kirk Dillard in the GOP primary, and listed two other GOP candidates - Dan Rutherford and Bill Brady - as ISRA "friends." They did not recommend voting for the eventual winner Bruce Rauner.
"We were working hard to get this started earlier," Feagans said. "We're in the middle of the effort now, and hoping people will contact us to help with this effort."
