The Chicago Sun-Times reports in a story published Sunday that the two ceremonies performed by Justice Anne Burke included a double wedding last week at a historic mansion in Chicago.
Burke, who is married to powerful Chicago Alderman Ed Burke, is a Roman Catholic but says she doesn't feel her faith "interferes" with her judicial responsibilities. “I will not step back from this position. It is a right one. And that’s what important," Burke said.
Burke's view on same-sex marriage contrasts with the Archdiocese of Chicago. Cardinal Francis George was a vocal opponent of the legislation allowing gay couples to wed.
Lawmakers approved it last year after an earlier attempted stalled.
