Representatives from Equality Illinois, The Civil Right Agenda, and several other gay activist organizations held a press conference today to endorse Democrat Gov. Pat Quinn by denouncing Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner.
Anthony Martinez of The Civil Rights Agenda said the announcement was spurred by Rauner's endorsement by GOProud, a gay Republican organization.
At a press conference today, the gay Democrat groups accused Rauner of not being vocal enough in support of gay marriage.
"Governor Quinn has not just fought for marriage rights, he has used every tool in his arsenal to help us pass the marriage rights bill," said Bernard Cherkasov, CEO of Equality Illinois. "On the other hand, Bruce Rauner has used every opportunity to express his opposition to marriage for same-sex couples … and that is shameful."
At a November Tea Party speaking engagement in Quincy, Illinois, Rauner, who has framed himself as a social moderate, said that he would have preferred the issue of same-sex marriage had been decided by the voters in a referendum rather than by the legislature.
