ROCKFORD - Winnebago County GOP officials voted unanimously to keep Jim Thompson as their county chairman Tuesday night, despite calls from Winnebago County board members and GOP gubernatorial nominee Bruce Rauner for him to step down.
Thompson had included a joke in a recent newsletter that Rauner and other prominent Republicans found offensive. The joke referenced President Obama and compared him to a zebra/donkey combo that the media adored. The news clipping insulted blacks, Democrats and the media.
Thompson apologized to anyone that was offended and promised not to do anything like that again in the future.
After the closed door meeting, Thompson made the following brief statement: “After consultation with my executive committee, they have decided unanimously to retain me as chair. And I am pleased to continue to serve in that capacity. Thank you.”
