CHICAGO - Among other prominent Republican leaders, Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner will be joining the Illinois Business Immigration Coalition at a gathering next Tuesday to urge Congress to adopt immigration reform.
Other GOP leaders expected to attend include former U.S. House Speaker Denny Hastert, former governors Jim Edgar and Jim Thompson, State Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka, and Republican legislative leaders State Sen. Christine Radogno and State Rep. Jim Durkin.
The event will be at the Chicago Club where Fortune 500 executives, state trade associations, and Latino and Asian business people are expected to demand a vote on illegal immigration reform, arguing that it is "politically smart, economically sound, and morally right."
Critics of reform question the economic and political wisdom of the Democrat-led plan, and argue that rewarding people for breaking the law is, in fact, immoral and harmful to the rule of law.
President Obama has been threatening to use executive action to go around congress as a way of rallying Hispanic support for Democrats before the November election.
