CHICAGO - With a Latino female - fluent in Spanish - on the IL GOP's gubernatorial team for the November election, 2014 could be a year that turns the head of Illinois' significant Latino population. Republicans nationwide are making pointed outreach to minority voters, and the Chicago GOP is joining that effort.
Chicago Republicans started an ad campaign this week on Chicago area Spanish-language radio ads to recruit candidates. The ad campaign will be running for five days on two Chicago area Spanish-language radio stations. The five-day campaign is expected to reach 100,000 listeners per day.
"We still have a small window to recruit candidates before the June 2 filing deadline," said Chris Cleveland, Vice Chairman of the Chicago GOP. "We'd like to find qualified Spanish-speaking candidates for some of our vacancies on the ballot."
"While any candidate must speak English, we think that spreading the message beyond the traditional media into the Spanish-speaking community will broaden our reach," said Cleveland.
The ads are being paid for by Iowa-based America's PAC, an organization that advertises a conservative message in minority communities.
"We were attracted by the Chicago GOP's focus on recruiting minority candidates," said Tom Donelson, Chairman of America's PAC. "They've attracted attention for what they're doing well beyond the Chicago area."
