ANNA - Mary Shephard, the elderly Illinois woman who fought the state's illegal ban on carrying concealed weapons, has finally received her permit to have a handgun in public.
Shephard was severely beaten by an intruder in 2009 while working at her church in Anna, Illinois (photo above).
Unable to defend herself because of the state's ban on carrying handguns, she sued the state for the right to protect herself.
After years of fighting to deny citizens second amendment rights, the state was finally forced to lift the ban following a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court. It was the last state in the nation to do so.
