“Shall the people's right to local self-government be asserted by Johnson County to ban corporate fracking as a violation of their rights to health, safety and a clean environment?”
If it passes, Johnson County will be only the second county in the nation to approve such a referendum. The referendum is advisory. The county board of three commissioners would have to approve a ban.
The group Southern Illinoisans Against Fracturing Our Environment (SAFE) obtained 1000 signatures - almost three times the required amount - to get the proposal on the March 18th ballot.
