UPDATE x1: A plan slightly different from Rep. Jakobsson's appears to be moving ahead in the Illinois House. More to come.
SPRINGFIELD - Despite the protest of hundreds of purple-shirted SEIU union members bussed in to the Capitol, the effort to place the progressive tax on the November ballot was defeated in committee Thursday.
In a 3-6-1 vote, the House Revenue and Finance Committee shut down HJRCA 33 with nearly 40 Democrats signed on as co-sponsors. Only three Democrat House members - Evans, Currie and Turner voted "Yes."
In order to be on the November ballot for voter consideration, the measure needs to pass both chambers with a super-majority vote. Other versions of the plan are under consideration.
