While I am not a fan of Hillary Clinton's politics at all, even a broken clock can be right twice a day. She took some flak recently for comparing Valdimir Putin to Adolph Hitler and her critics on the Left said that comparison was over the top. It was not.
Putin has plagiarized every paragraph of Hitler's 1938 playbook for Nazi annexation of Austria and the Sudentenland right down to the fake plebicite aided by foreign troops and rallies by ethnic Russians living in Ukraine that include burning books printed in the Ukrainian language. There are almost no effective military options available to western allies but that does not mean the west cannot punish Putin's behavior at all.
Russia in 2014 is more dependent than the old Soviet Union was on trade with the west. The most important thing the U.S. can do it offer credible leadership to coordinate members of the European Union to use any any economic tools they can to punish Russian agression and immediately. While President Obama has not been famous for his leadership in foreign policy up until now, this is the time for him to step up to the plate because relative weakness in the face of Russian agression is the best way to gurantee more of the same.
