CRYSTAL LAKE - A Hannah Beardsley Middle School student is being held in the Kane County Juvenile Detention Facility on charges of felony aggravated battery and hate crime in connection with an altercation at the school.
Authorities say Crystal Lake police responded Monday to a report of a fight between two students. It was initially determined the fight was an isolated incident between the two kids, one of whom was tackled and repeatedly struck.
The attacker was arrested, charged with battery and later released to his parents. However, further investigation Tuesday by the school and the McHenry County state's attorney determined the aggressor referred to the victim's national origin before the attack, and therefore felt "hate" in his heart prior to the fight. As a result, the charge of "hate crime" was added.
