WASHINGTON DC - The Republican-led U.S. House voted Tuesday to raise the nation's debt ceiling once again - and 28 Republicans, including two from Illinois - helped pass the measure 221 to 201.
GOP Congressmen Peter Roskam and John Shimkus joined Illinois Democrats in support of allowing America to go deeper into debt. The Illinois Democrats voting for the measure included Cheri Bustos, Danny Davis, Tammy Duckworth, Bill Enyart, Bill Foster, Luis Guttierez, Robin Kelly, Dan Lipinski, Mike Quigley, Jan Schakowsky, Brad Schneider.
“Our country continues to spend more money than it takes in, borrows money it doesn’t have to make up the difference, and it’s the American taxpayer who pays the bill,” said Rep. Hultgren. “I cannot in good conscience vote to extend Washington’s borrowing capacity yet again without any meaningful movement to reduce how many taxpayer dollars the government spends. I am disappointed by the inability of Washington to do what Americans do every day—spend what they bring in, and nothing more.”
