PEORIA - If you live in an Illinois Republican household, sometime this week you will receive a 12-page mailer called the "Bruce Rauner Shakedown Express," an independent expenditure mail piece focused on GOP gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner. The multi-page piece is paid for by the Republican Fund for Progress & Jobs.
As reported on IR today, Rauner is currently leading in the polls.
"It's the other side of the story that Bruce Rauner's ads don't tell voters," brochure author and distributor Steven Shearer told Illinois Review Tuesday. "People are telling me they were planning to vote for Rauner until they found out about this or that in the mailer."
Shearer said 500,000 were sent out across the state. He said the format of the campaign brochure appeals to voters who are serious about getting informed about the candidates before they vote in the March 18th GOP Primary.
When criticized for taking funding from the Chicagoland Operators Local 150 to help fund the project, Shearer said, "Over 42 percent of this local pulled a Republican ballot in the last primary. If we ignore or alienate those union voters, the Republican Party will always be a minority in Illinois." The same group that helped fund the 12-page brochure also financially supported former Republican Congressman Joe Walsh and current Congressman John Shimkus, two of Illinois' most conservative Congressmen, Shearer said.
The Bruce Rauner Shakedown Express includes graphics like these, criticizing Rauner's donations to Democrat Governor Ed Rendell:
And a history of other Rauner Family donations in contrast to Ronald Reagan's strategy:
And then it touches on the abortion issue - which the Rauner campaign avoids discussing. While Mr. Rauner says he's "pro-choice," Mrs. Rauner is "radically pro-abortion," it says:
