PONTIAC - Reported to have over a million dollars at the end of the 3rd quarter and added over $200,000 since then, State Treasurer Dan Rutherford - upholding his reputation for frugality - raised eyebrows when he called on his gubernatorial campaign volunteers Tuesday to bring pantry items with them when they pick up campaign signs next weekend.
In a Facebook announcement Tuesday, Rutherford said, "On Sunday, January 12, 2014 from noon-2:30 PM we will be having a stock the pantry and 'Rutherford for Governor' sign pick up at our Pontiac office..."
Rutherford said campaign staff and volunteers are spending long hours at the office during the months before the Primary and General Election, so "We would appreciate it if you would be willing to pitch in and help supply some basic necessities for the pantry such as coffee, soda, napkins, paper towels, postage stamps (especially), etc.," he wrote. But they can drop off those 'pantry stocking' items the week before or after, he said.
Rutherford said he will personally be at the Pontiac office from 1:30-2:00 PM on January 12th. The 2013 4th quarter campaign filings with the State Board of Election are due January 16th.
