It's as if Adam Kinzinger has a button on the back of his head that when pressed he says "let's go bomb them, let's go bomb them" whenever new turbulence arises in the Middle East. He called on the Obama Administration yesterday to "Immediately" commence a bombing campaign in Iraq to attack Al Qaeda. He made his remarks on the floor of the US House of Representatives. Al Qaeda doesn't deserve any oxygen, but this is an internal Security Issue for Iraq.
1. May I remind my opponent the reason we went to war with Iraq wasn't because of 911 or 1400 years of Sunni-Shiite sectarian violence. It was to find and destroy Weapons of Mass Destruction, and eliminate Saddam Hussein's ability to produce them again. That mission was accomplished.
2. The USA liberated Iraq and created the conditions for the Iraqi people to be self-governing. Iraq's current problem with Al Qaeda is an internal security issue. It is their country, and they must maintain domestic order themselves.
3. My opponent wants to project American force into a sovereign nation that must be able to handle its own domestic security challenges. If there is a realistic American interest in going back to Iraq, my opponent should articulate that interest precisely. When my opponent's button is pressed he gratuitously uses the memory of our fallen and wounded heroes to draw us back into a conflict where they have already done their job.
This is no way to fluff up conservative credentials by attempting to flex military might as soon as his 'go bomb them' button is pressed which is increasingly the only component to his neo-conservative credentials.
