CHICAGO - Part of Chicago Public Media's staff of 49 reporters, hosts and producers at WBEZ FM 91.5 voted to unionize Wednesday. The nonprofit Chicago Public Media will be negotiating with representatives of the Screen Actors Guild/American Federation of Television and Radio Artists now, the same union that represents staff at National Public Radio.
The call in 2010 for the National Endowment of the Arts to end government subsidies to National Public Radio and its affiliates fell on deaf ears, and has quieted in Congress. NPR said federal grants made up two percent of their budget.
However, being classified as a nonprofit, Chicago Public Media and its union affiliation do not pay into the state or federal coffers.
