CHICAGO - Public accountability is one way to lessen government corruption, and a growing number of local governments throughout Illinois are offering taxpayers online information to be more transparent.
The Illinois Policy Institute has been evaluating online information available for the state's top 25 most populated cities, and found many still failing to be as transparent as they could be. Seven out of the ten most populated municipalities failed to pass The Institute's test, including Chicago, Aurora, Rockford, Joliet, Springfield, Cicero and Champaign.
Illinois' fifth most populated city - Naperville - passed with an impressive 94%, followed closely by Peoria at 92%. The City of Elgin's online government tranparency neared perfection with a 99%.
