“We cannot have good schools, outstanding universities, safe neighborhoods or critical safety-net programs for our most vulnerable if our state remains on this collision course with bankruptcy,” said Cross. “The first step toward fixing our state begins with honestly balancing our budget.”
The website, www.honestbalancedbudget.com, includes a letter for citizens to sign as well as information on the state’s budget and what Cross would do as Treasurer to demand an honestly balanced budget from the legislature and Governor. The petitions will be gathered and delivered to the Governor and each member of the General Assembly.
Cross has pledged to use the full power of the Office of Illinois State Treasurer to require the legislature to enact an honestly balanced budget, including legal remedies. He says he will also establish a Government Integrity Unit inside the Treasurer’s office, comprised of financial experts, former prosecutors and law enforcement officials who will be charged with the task of reviewing state financial documents to ensure their accuracy and protect state pension funds from corruption and fraud.
