An e-mail invitation to attend a Joe Walsh Freedom Townhouse Tour read: Ready to Grow Up and Save Our Country? Come to the Walsh Freedom Tour. It continued with these two questions: Are you genuinely concerned about the country that you love so much? Are you disgusted by the Democrats and disappointed in the Republicans?
During the month of September Joe Walsh presented a number of Walsh Freedom Townhalls. I joined about 150 other individuals that gathered on a beautiful afternoon at Gorton Community Center Auditorium in Lake Forest to hear Joe Walsh speak. He didn't disappoint, sending attendees home with a fire of conviction within them to make a difference by becoming a Freedom Fighter.
Walsh's appearance was greeted with hearty applause and obvious enthusiasm. Many in the audience were most likely fans of his AM560 radio talk show every weekday evening from 5pm - 8pm. Others possibly came to Gorton Center out of interest and perhaps even curiosity, aware of how Joe repeatedly ticked off so many of his fellow Republican House members by not mincing words about the ills he observed while serving as a Republican congressman in U.S. District 8 from 2010 - 2012.
Walsh's behavior during his one term was not a surprise to those who knew Walsh as a passionate individual that cared about his country. When elected, Walsh made a number of pledges to actually accomplish something if people were to elect him. Believing this country was founded on a distrust of government, skepticism was not an undesirable trait to exhibit. As it was, Walsh put himself before more than 300 open town hall meetings, more than any other congressman, allowing even the most skeptical individuals to be heard.
In light of Joe Walsh's outspokenness while serving in Congress, some might be wondering how Walsh landed the job at WIND AM-560? It was WIND management who approached Joe five months ago about doing a show. Joe reminded management of the way he had behaved in Congress, and how, if hired, he was going to shoot and scream to force the American people to get off their butts and do something about the fact that we are losing our country. This was ok with WIND.
Walsh admitted that he doesn't know how to do talk radio, often pushing the wrong buttons. Even so, Joe's WIND show is going gang busters because so many people feel the way Walsh does. There is no magic in explaining how well Joe is doing with his radio gig. He is succeeding because he's reaching people who like what he has to say. Walsh's radio platform, however, has also given him a venue to encourage active participation among his listeners. Walsh's Freedom Tour was approved by WIND management.
Without losing a beat after his initial warm Gorton Center audience reception, Joe Walsh made this well received remark:
Something we all agree on, whether Democrat, Independent, or Republican, is that we live on the greatest country God has ever given this planet. It is the only country ever founded around an idea and that idea was freedom.
Following were two happenings which have become an established part of Walsh's townhall meetings: 1) Acknowledging the idea of freedom by reciting the Pledge, and 2) Paying tribute to the heroes present who have served and defended our freedom.
Joe Walsh believes with all his heart and his head that time is limited to turn this country around. John Adams brilliantly gave us something about 250 years ago that is just magical. He gave us a country where you are free. As such he believed that a dollar earned was yours to keep.
Jefferson, Madison, and Adams all believed in a little bit of government to do the basic things, but also expected individuals to be responsible for their own lives. They were free to live their lives, keeping government out of their hair, but also being responsible individuals.
We have drifted far away from the country of our Founders. We are not free. Walsh puts the blame on both Republicans and Democrats. We now live in a nation where not even half of the dollar we make is ours to keep. Many Americans are lucky to keep 44 cents of every dollar earned and that number is going down every year. How is it possible to say that we live in a free country if we can't keep at least one-half of every dollar we make?
We are not free when government makes most of our health care decisions; when, according to law, it can force a Catholic priest to subsidize a product that goes against his faith; when government can force us to buy health insurance; and when government agents (NSA) can abuse our freedom of privacy by listening in to our calls.
What would Joe Walsh's favorite Founding Father, Thomas Jefferson, have to say about the condition of this nation? He would most likely shake his head and say: What did you do? We gave you a free country, and you have replaced freedom with big government that is seeking to take control over so many areas of your lives.
We're on the road to financial and moral bankruptcy. The America we have we can't afford. Even for those who want government to do many things, they must come to a realization that we can't afford it. It will bankrupt us. One government program by itself, Medicare, if not dramatically changed, won't be around when any young person becomes a senior citizens They will read about Medicare as seniors read about dinosaurs.
Concerning our debt, to say that we are 17 trillion in debt is a lie. We are closer to 100 trillion in debt with the unfunded future liabilities of Medicare and Social Security. Young people of today will be strapped with a Herculean debt when they come of age. A reduction of their standard of living will also occur, when a salary of $160,000 could be taxed at a rate of 90%.
Not only are we financially bankrupt, but this nation is also morally bankrupt with every day killings that make no sense.
A generation of young men is growing up who have no respect for or value of life, making killing no big deal. There is no daddy, or church, or community in their lives. Government can't replace this void by farming out values or in teaching right from wrong.
One of Joe Welsh's favorite Democrats, Daniel Patrick Moynihan, warned in 1964 that the black family was in crisis. 16% of all black babies were born without a father. This was a crisis then, but what about now? In 2013 it's up to 73% among blacks of babies born without a father. Among white families, 50% grow up without a daddy. Community ties have weakened, and the church has become less important in the lives of many.
