CHICAGO - A new poll showing a stunning surge in support for gay marriage in Illinois was released Monday by Fako & Associates, a Lisle polling firm owned and operated by Illinois Democratic consultants.
Dave Fako, whose LinkedIn resume shows he once worked for House Speaker Mike Madigan and the Illinois House Democratic Campaign Committee and Steve Leopoldo, the firm's Vice-President, found that 52 percent of Illinois voters support legalizing marriage for gay and lesbian couples. They say the figure edged up to 54 percent support when pollsters shared information about the summer’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling that overturned federal restrictions against recognizing same-sex marriages.
The poll was commissioned by Equality Illinois, Illinois' largest gay rights activist group.
According to Illinois Observer, Catholics supported gay marriage 61 percent to 32 percent, African-Americans 55 to 36 percent, and Hispanics 63 to 29.
