The U.S. Government has temporarily shutdown many times since 1976. But only during this shutdown has the National Park Service tried to close open air monuments. Only during this shutdown have contract Roman Catholic chaplains for the military been threatened with arrest even if they volunteer to say mass or administer sacraments on a military base with no pay. Only during this shutdown have children been turned away from cancer trials by National Institutes of Health.
I don't like saying this, but the Obama Administration is behaving like a petulant child who is intent to punish adults because it cannot have everything it wants. The selective shutdown measures this last two weeks that have not happened in any previous shutdown are mean for the sake of being mean.
The president cannot claim as he so often does that his Health Care law cannot be negotiated with Republicans because it is settled law. If it actually is settled law, then why does the president himself so often disobey his own law? He has delayed the corporate mandate by one year without even talking with either party in Congress and his HHS-granted waivers to 1,200 companies and unions that are favorites of the adminstration.
If the "Affordable Health Care Act" is law, then the president needs to start obeying it also. This is not just a failure of leadership over a political impasse between two parties, it is a failure of personal character on the part of the nation's chief executive that rivals the failures of character in President Nixon 40 years ago.
