CHICAGO - Responding to news reports about her voting history and residency, 8th Congressional District GOP candidate Manju Goel confirmed to Illinois Review that she has voted in Democratic primaries. She did not address a question about her residency, which is outside the District.
In an email, Goel wrote:
"...I wanted you to know that I have supported many more Republicans in recent years than Democrats. Like many voters, I wasn't always a Republican...but particularly on the issues of healthcare, debts, deficits, and even on America's stance on the war on terror, Democrats have moved consistently too far to the left. Also, Democrats in the past have had stronger more successful outreach programs to Indian Americans.
I also want you to know that I am a strong fiscal conservative, but even more important than party identity, my love for America and devotion to representing our district will play a larger role in shaping my votes on specific issues (I also believe there are some even inside our party who have supported far too much government spending.)"
Thursday morning the Goel campaign sent over a press statement with more information on her Democrat voting history, stating:
Manju Goel immigrated to the United States inspired by President Ronald Reagan. His vision of “the shining city on the hill with doors open to anyone with the will and heart to get there” has been the greatest inspiration and strength to Manju. She believes that while Ronald Reagan was a Democrat at one time, he is one of the greatest Republican presidents in the history of our country.
Manju has voted for many more Republicans in recent years than Democrats. Like many voters and President Reagan, she wasn't always a Republican...but particularly on the issues of healthcare, debts, deficits, fiscal discipline, personal responsibility and on America's stance on the war on terror, Democrats have moved consistently too far to the left.
Manju has voted in a Democratic primary in the past in support of Stephanie Kifowit, a fiscally conservative, lower taxes, pro-business and pro-jobs Democrat with the best chances of winning the newly created Illinois House District 84.Manju Goel is running for Congress because she believes that our country is headed for disaster under the leadership of President Barack Obama and members of Congress like Congresswoman Duckworth. She believes deeply in her conservative philosophy. She has a deep desire to repeal and retire Pres. Obama and Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth to save the future of our sons and daughters. She knows that it will be a lot of hard work, but it is necessary to expand the base of our Republican Party for it to win majorities and return our country on the path of prosperity for all.
