Jayme Odom, executive director of the Illinois Republican Party, said Party Chairman Jack Dorgan is attempting to draft a candidate.
Republican observers say it’s pretty obvious why no one is jockeying for the position. “I think you have to admit it would be a tough one to win,” said state Sen. Kyle McCarter (R-Lebanon).
In 1998 White beat Republican attorney Al Salvi by a 55.4 percent to 42.5 percent margin. In 2006, then-state Sen. Dan Rutherford, R-Chenoa, garnered 1.1 million votes to White’s 2.2 million votes. And in 2010 White received nearly 70 percent of the vote against political unknown Robert Enriquez of Aurora.
When White makes his formal announcement Thursday, he’ll head into the campaign season with more than $470,000 in his campaign account.
