SPRINGFIELD - Of the $50 million spent on renovating Illinois' Capitol building, lawmakers are saying now that they're embarrassed at what has been spent on things like bronze doors and chandeliers.
But House Speaker Mike Madigan's office doesn't seem rankled at all about what went on. After all, representatives from House Speaker Mike Madigan, House Minority Leader Tom Cross, Senate President John Cullerton and Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno's office authorized $669,000 for three sets of bronze doors and $323,000 for four chandeliers.
Springfield's paper reports that Steve Brown, spokesman for House Speaker Michael Madigan, has said that the project went through the state's usual bidding and procurement process. He's said the doors were part of a master plan approved by the Office of the Capitol Architect Board, which includes representatives from the offices of all four legislative leaders.
