LAKE COUNTY - Friday, a circuit judge issued a preliminary injunction to stop the appointment of an Election Commission in Lake County and ordered the election process to remain with the Lake County Clerk Willard Hellander while the constitutionality is determined of the newly-signed PA 98-115. The section being challenged overrules the county's current election system and forces on Lake County an unfunded, state-mandated election commission.
Soon after Governor Pat Quinn signed the bill into law allowing online voter registration, Lake County officials filed a suit reacting to a little-discussed provision in the same law that requires the county to set up a new election commission. The provision in HB 2418 was so under the radar that the two Democrats that sponsored the legislation insisted they hae no idea how the Lake County election commission section was added in. Neither did either sponsor know who was responsible for the addition.
