CHICAGO - When all was said and done, 16 were shot and killed, 73 shot and wounded with a total of 17 homicides in Chicago from July 1 to July 7, a Chicago-based website on area crime reports this morning. That follows the month of June, when 40 were shot and killed, 225 shot and wounded, totaling 45 homicides in the city.
Equally sobering are the stats of this ongoing killing spree - overwhelmingly the shooting victims were black males at an average age of 26. Those stats show Chicago's neighborhoods are ground zero of a bloody, violent gang war.
These shootings are in a city where handguns are outlawed and it is illegal for law-abiding citizens to protect themselves with the right to carry.
