The stranger donated the money to 19-year-old Monte Johnson after reading a story about Johnson's ordeal. Johnson, whose father died when he was a baby, was left an orphan after his mother died -- along with 20 others -- in a 2003 nightclub stampede in Chicago, according to the newspaper.
At the time of the incident, Johnson, and other children affected by the tragedy, were promised money from a college scholarship fund set up by the government's Chicago Public Schools. But Johnson and others never received their share of the money. The teenager was able to enroll at South Carolina State University through a marching band scholarship, but was later forced to drop out because he could no longer afford tuition, according to the newspaper.
