Stand by your man: Emanuel backs McCarthy despite remarks, criticism and murder rate

Despite Chicago Police Chief Garry McCarthy's comments about the Constitutional rights of legal firearms owners, increasing criticism about him by African American aldermen, and a skyrocketing murder rate, Mayor Rahm Emanuel gave McCarthy his “100 percent support” at a press conference today.

“Both Garry McCarthy, Al Wysinger (First Deputy Police Supt.) and the entire leadership in the police department have my 100 percent support,” Emanuel told the media.

Two weeks ago McCarthy told WLS's Bill Cameron he strongly believes legal firearms owners who lobby their elected representatives or who donate money to political campaigns are engaged in corruption that endangers public safety. He went on to say the U.S. Constitution limits citizens to owning smooth-bore muskets and supports mandatory liability insurance for firearm owners as well as the mandatory application of GPS tracking devices to civilian owned firearms.
